Where to go in South Dalmatia? Diocletian’s Palace in Split
Without a doubt, this is an eye-catching place and, contrary to appearances, quite unusual. You need to know that the old town in Split is actually… the ruins of a palace! The Roman Emperor Diocletian, because this is his residence, built a large complex in Split, where he spent the last years of his life after abandoning the throne. The remains of Roman times, although subtle in places, make an amazing impression, because the streets of the old town are former corridors of the palace. Under the streets there are underground corridors, which are also open to the public.
A few kilometers from the center there are interesting ruins of the city of Salona, the birthplace of the mentioned emperor, which will also be of interest to history lovers. The unquestionable advantage of staying in Split is the fact that, as a developed port city, it is a great base for visiting the numerous islands in the area. This is also supported by lower accommodation prices than in Dubrovnik, for example. Therefore, we recommend Split as an interesting, unique point on the map of Southern Dalmatia!
Interesting places in South Dalmatia – Island Korčula
Immediately after visiting the city of Split, we recommend a visit to the island of Korčula, which is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Adriatic. It is a slightly quieter place than the previously mentioned cities, but it is impossible to get bored here! In the capital of the same name as the island, visitors can visit the house where, according to some legends, Marco Polo himself was born.
Among the city’s streets you can see the influences of many cultures that have been present here for centuries, for example the characteristic Venetian architecture. Those who love discovering local traditions will appreciate a unique type of dance called Moreška, which is a combination of a theater performance and arranged sword fights. This is a dance that cannot be found anywhere else, so it is worth going to the island of Korčula and seeing this spectacle with your own eyes.
Another of the many interesting places is the Vela Spila cave. There is a picturesque road leading to it with a view of the olive groves, and the cave itself, interestingly, is not a dark, claustrophobic place at all. Its ceiling has two holes through which light enters, so it is a pleasant place even for children. Adults will appreciate the archaeological importance of this place – almost every year, new traces of settlement dating back tens of thousands of years are discovered here! The cave still hides many secrets and further discoveries can be expected. Similarly, this inconspicuous island offers visitors many secrets to discover, so it is worth including it in your trip plan!

South Dalmatia awaits – time for an adventure in the southern paradise!
As you can see, one of the most interesting regions you can visit in the Balkans is Southern Dalmatia. Croatia offers numerous attractions, and those proposed here are just the tip of the iceberg, although they are certainly particularly worth your attention. The unique atmosphere of this place is created by the influence of ancient empires – including the Roman, Ottoman and Venetian. All this is visible in art, architecture, cuisine and local customs.
Getting to know this heritage will be an unforgettable adventure, especially since the Croatians are very hospitable and helpful, and thanks to our common Slavic roots you can feel at home here. Gourmets can enjoy delicious seafood, fish, cheese and olives, as well as world-famous wines. Sports fans will appreciate the charming hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as countless diving spots. In short, there is no doubt that everyone will spend unforgettable moments in Southern Dalmatia!
