Famous sandy beaches on the island of Brač
It’s hard to argue with that – wonderful beaches are one of the most appreciated advantages that Croatia offers. The island of Brač is no exception and can even be considered a representative of this country in terms of beautiful beaches! They are not only long and impressive, but also clean and safe, so they will also successfully add splendor to family holidays.
Croatia is characterized by a rugged, varied coastline, which makes each beach a unique place to relax. There is always a chance that with a little effort you will find a slightly more secluded sandy corner. Nevertheless, it is also worth visiting the most popular beaches of Brač, if only because of the unique sceneries they offer. Undoubtedly, the leader is the beach with the charming name Zlatni Rat, which can be understood as “golden horn”. Indeed, its appearance from a bird’s eye view brings to mind associations with a horn, and this unusual shape of the beach is due to the meeting of two sea currents. For this reason, its sandy headland is quite it often changes shape, but usually penetrates the sea to a distance of over 150 meters!
The area is also an ideal place for people practicing water sports, as there are favorable winds, and a visit to one of the nearby bars will enhance your relaxation. Nearby there is also a brick water tank from the times of the Roman Empire, remembering the ancient inhabitants of the island.
As for less crowded places, the Sumartin beach near the village of the same name, located in the eastern part of the island, should meet expectations. Its advantages are cleanliness, developed tourist infrastructure and, of course, a slightly more intimate atmosphere. At the coast you can find an inflatable playground on the water, which will surely delight the little ones!
Yet another alternative is the beach and bay of Lovrečina, which encourages visitors with its proximity to the shade of trees and gently sloping shore. It is worth noting here that the island has many other beaches, e.g. Lučica in the western part of the island, so it is a good idea to look for the one that will perfectly suit your personal preferences.
What monuments does the island of Brač offer?
The island of Brač is characterized by numerous relics testifying to its long and interesting history. It is impossible to list them all, but it is worth mentioning the most intriguing ones. Traces of human settlements present in the Kopačina cave date back to 12,000 BC, which is one of the oldest such finds in all of Croatia!
Millennia later, specifically in the 15th century, when the island was inhabited by numerous monks and Christianity mixed with ancient beliefs, the so-called Dragon Cave was created. It owes its name to mysterious reliefs depicting a dragon, but there are also other mythical signs and, interestingly, Christian symbolism. Such caves were often places for the construction of chapels, the remains of which have survived to this day.
When it comes to religious buildings, an interesting phenomenon is the existence of specially built hermitages on the island for monks who want to escape from the mundane world. The one worth mentioning here is called Blaca. The hermitage is located partly inside the caves, and its view is worth the hike you have to do to get there.
In addition to the chapel, this quite monumental building housed richly equipped bedrooms, a library, a kitchen, and even an astronomical observatory. Today, the Blaca hermitage, eagerly visited by tourists, is one of the most interesting attractions on the island. However, this is only a very modest part of what Brač offers and it is best to see for yourself what other secrets its corners hide!
