Zadar – a city that charms from the first glance. Located on the Adriatic coast in northern Dalmatia, it is a place where thousands of years of history are combined with modern art, an incomparable atmosphere and amazing nature. Although less known than Split or Dubrovnik, Zadar captivates with its authenticity, diversity and extraordinary energy. It is a true jewel of Croatia that deserves the attention of every traveler.
A city that has survived for centuries
Zadar’s history dates back more than 3,000 years. In ancient times, it was an important trading center, first under the rule of the Illyrians and then the Romans. Walking through the streets of the old town, you can still feel the spirit of times gone by. Roman ruins, fragments of defensive walls, the forum and numerous churches are evidence of a turbulent but incredibly interesting past.
The most characteristic monument is undoubtedly the Church of St. Donatus – a round building from the 9th century that has become a symbol of the city. Built on the foundations of the Roman forum, it still impresses with its simplicity and majestic presence. The interior of the church is often used as a concert hall thanks to its exceptional acoustics.
Architecture full of contrasts
Zadar is a city of contrasts – on the one hand, the walled old town with narrow stone streets, and on the other – modern art installations that harmoniously fit into the seaside landscape.
The most famous contemporary work of art is the Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) – a unique installation that attracts thousands of tourists every year. It is a staircase leading to the sea, under which a system of pipes and pipes is hidden. The sea waves, hitting the shore, create sounds – a unique, natural symphony that never repeats itself. An incredibly mesmerizing experience that must be experienced first-hand.
Right next to the organ is another modern attraction – “Greetings to the Sun” (Pozdrav Suncu), a glass installation made up of hundreds of solar panels. During the day, they absorb solar energy, and at night they transform into a spectacular light show. It is a kind of dance of light that makes a huge impression – on both adults and children.
Adriatic cuisine and Dalmatian hospitality
A visit to Zadar is also a feast for the senses – especially the palate. The city is famous for its traditional Dalmatian cuisine, which is based on simple but incredibly aromatic ingredients. Fresh seafood, olive oil, cheeses and local wines are must-sees on any culinary journey.
It is worth trying the local specialty – pašticada, which is stewed beef in a wine and spice marinade, served with homemade dumplings. Fish lovers will certainly appreciate the grilled bream, red mullet or octopus on the grill.
And let’s not forget the famous Maraschino liqueur, produced in Zadar since the 18th century from Marasca cherries. It is one of the most famous Croatian exports, which will delight every gourmet.

Natural beauty and proximity to nature
Zadar is also an ideal base for exploring Croatian nature. Within a radius of a few dozen kilometers there are four national parks – Paklenica, Kornati, Krka and Plitvice Lakes.
Kornati National Park is an archipelago of almost 150 islands and islets, often referred to as a “stone paradise”. It is a dream place for a yacht cruise, diving or just swimming in crystal clear waters.
For mountain hiking enthusiasts, Paklenica is the perfect destination, with its monumental canyons and well-marked trails. And if you dream of bathing in waterfalls, head to Krka National Park, where you can swim in natural pools surrounded by greenery.
Zadar at night – the magic of lights and local atmosphere
Evenings in Zadar have their own unique atmosphere. Walking along the Riva promenade, you can admire the sunset, which – according to the famous director Alfred Hitchcock – is the most beautiful in the world. Indeed, when the sun sinks into the Adriatic and the sky takes on shades of orange and purple, it is hard to disagree.
The city is also bustling after dark – the bars, cafes and restaurants are full of locals and tourists. Stop for a drink at one of the sea-view pubs, listen to live music or just sit and soak up the Mediterranean peace.
